UNWELCOMED IN MY OWN COUNTRY

When I was a child I was always fascinated by the stories my relatives would share after working in the big city of Toronto, so it was only natural that when I graduated high school I would gravitate there.  As I neared the city, I will never forget the way the blistering summer heat rose from the asphalt of the 401 or the heavy haze that hung in the air.  And I will never forget the words that were yelled out to me from a passing car, “Get the f*** back to where you came from you stupid Newfie!”
